Pro-Islam Bias in India’s Foreign Policy Meets Its Logical End in the Hand of Modi Govt 2.0

Israel on Tuesday formally thanked India for it crucial vote at the UN’s Economic and social council (ECOSOC) to deny observer status to a Palestinian human right organisation named ‘Shahed’.

“Thankyou India for standing with Israel in UN and rejecting the request of terrorist organisation ‘Shahed’ to obtain the status of an observer in UN,” tweeted Deputy Chief of mission at the Israel embassy in Delhi Maya Kadosh.

“Together we (India & Israel) will continue to act against terrorist organisations that intend to harm, she further wrote.

This is the first time India has voted with Israel on a resolution initiated by Jerusalem at the UN.

Israel introduced at a meeting of the ECOSOC the draft decision "L.15" on June 6 titled "Application of the non-governmental organisation Palestinian Association for Human Rights - Witness for consultative status with the Economic and Social Council" that sought to return to the NGO Committee Witness' application for consultative status, a very rare occurrence.

Shahed had applied for observer status in January, and it cleared the first stage at Ecosoc within a couple of weeks. In March, Israel designated Shahed as a terrorist organisation for its links to Hamas and the Iranian-inspired Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

The decision was adopted by a recorded vote of 28 in favour to 15 against, with five abstentions. Countries voting in favour of the decision were Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and the United States.

For decades, India had been supporting the two-nation theory looking at Israel and Palestine as separate and independent entities. However, it seems that India’s diplomatic policy no longer supports this delusional stance.

India's position on the Middle East Peace Process has been consistent and clear. India supports a negotiated solution resulting in a sovereign, independent, viable and united State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living within secure and recognised borders, side by side at peace with Israel as endorsed in the Quartet Roadmap and relevant UNSC Resolutions.

India has also always played a proactive role in garnering support for the Palestinian cause in multilateral fora.

Modi having returned to power for the second term with a staggering majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls seems to have taken the first historic step towards demolishing the delusional policy towards Israel and Palestine and this has officially kicked off the process of de-hyphenating Israel-Palestine relations. This is suggestive of the fact that the present government which is already in its second term and whose policy vision has already been vindicated by the electorate might not care for minority appeasement in both domestic and international policy decisions.
