Ahead of the first meeting of NITI Aayog's governing council on June 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday approved reconstitution of the policy think tank.

While Rajiv Kumar continue to remain the vice chairman with V K Saraswat, Ramesh Chand and Dr V K Paul as members including Home Minister Amit Shah as an ex-officio member, the name of economist Bibek Debroy was dropped.

Bibek Debroy was appointed full-time member when Niti Aayog was formed via a resolution of the Union Cabinet on January 1, 2015.

Excluding Amit Shah, other three ex-officio members are Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

Niti Aayog is the premier policy think tank of the government that provides both ‘directional and policy inputs’.

Besides, Road Transport and Highways and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) minister Nitin Gadkari, Social Justice and Empowerment minister Thawar Singh Gahlot, Railways and Commerce minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of Statistics and Programme implementation are four special invitees.
