Chief minister Naveen Patnaik today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, the official residence of Prime Minister, and sought Central assistance of Rs 5000 crore for rehabilitation and restoration work of cyclone ‘Fani’. He also asked that special category status be accorded to Odisha.

After meeting the PM, the Chief Minister spoke to the media and said, “I met the Prime Minister and congratulated him on his electoral victory. I even requested him to accord Odisha a special category state status. As you know, we have been hit by the recent cyclone Fani, which has done a great deal of damage. I also asked the Prime Minister to release Rs 5,000 crore central assistance for post-cyclone restoration works and provide 5 lakh pucca houses to families whose kutcha houses have been completely damaged.”

It is notable to mention here that the Centre had announced a relief package of Rs 340 crore before the cyclone hit the coastal state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an additional assistance of Rs 1,000 crore on his visit to Odisha following the cyclone.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has earlier written to the Prime Minister requesting him to consider sanctioning 5 lakh Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana special houses for the Cyclone-hit people.

During the 30-minute talks between the two leaders, Patnaik also reportedly sought the revision of the coal royalty to help his state generate revenue.

While speculations were rife that the two leaders would talk about BJD contending for the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker post amid opposition by NDA ally Shiv Sena, Naveen Patnaik said that there were no discussions at all.

On Saturday, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi said that they will impress upon PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman to formulate a special package of assistance for the hotel and tourism sector in Odisha in view of the damage cause by Cyclone Fani.

Pradhan said the centre had been proactive in assisting the state government in relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction work.

As steel minister, he said, the focus will be on ancillary industries to create employment opportunity.

On June 15 (Saturday), CM Naveen is scheduled to attend the 5th Meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog at 02:30 PM. He will return to Odisha the following evening in an Air India flight departing from Indira Gandhi International Airport at 06:40 PM.
