Once Mahatma Gandhi said in the context of Khadi, “I feel convinced that the revival of hand-spinning and hand-weaving will make the largest contribution to the economic and moral regeneration of India. The millions must have a simple industry to supplement agriculture. Spinning was the cottage industry years ago, and if the millions are to be saved from starvation, they must be enabled to reproduce spinning in their homes and every village must repossess its own weaver”.

After PM Modi came to the helm of the affairs, one of his prime focusses has been to revive the near extinct Khadi industry. And it is a matter of great satisfaction that he has been remarkable successful in doing so. Since 2014, there has been a tremendous growth and a great turn around in the Khadi industry. Bot only it has created hundreds and thousands of jobs, it has also boosted our economy. It has revived an indigenous art and has also become a fashion trend giving tough competitions to the western fashion trends.

Since 2014, on numerous occasions, Modiji has been appealing the fellow citizens to adopt Khadi as a life style necessity. The industry, in the last four years has witnessed a 37.10% growth and the fabric production has increased by 38.30 million sqmts. Particularly in the fiscal 2017-18, while the mill sector production was 2157 million sqmts, the Khadi production alone has been 141.52 million sqmts, which is almost 6.5% share of all fabric production in the country.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Industries definitely deserve the kudos for this remarkable change in the hitherto moribund sector.

Today there are 4.95 lakh artisans who work in this khadi industry. An additional 373 Khadi institutions also have been opened in recent years. According to some estimates, Khadi industry aloe has created 1.8 million jobs in a span of Sept. 2014 to Sept. 2018. The average sales of Khadi sector stood at INR 914.07 crore between 2004-2014. But now it is increased by a whopping 100% to 1820.30 crore between 2015-2018.

Adding to this growth, a most welcome step has ben announced by Jharkhand government which will provide Khadi school uniforms to more than 40,000 students.

Well done Mr. Modi. It is  under your stewardship and visionary leadership have made a million dreams march ahead particularly in the rural segment.
