Odisha Exit Polls: Naveen Again Set to be CM for Fifth Time

Author : Odisha Today Bureau | Posted on: 2019-05-20

National exit polls show Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal (BJD) losing ground to the BJP in the Lok Sabha slugfest, but the regional party is seen coasting home for a fifth consecutive term in Odisha.

The BJP is likely to make huge strides towards bettering its performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Odisha with a number of exit poll surveys predicting big win for the saffron party in the State.

As per the survey with sample size of over one lakh, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is poised to form government for the record fifth time in Odisha. The regional party will successfully tide over the anti-incumbency factor and Modi wave in state.

On the contrary, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to perform well in Lok Sabha polls in the state as it might take its tally from one seat in 2014 to double digits. Congress might better its tally from zero to one seat.

An Odisha-centric exit poll jointly done by Sambad, the most circulated regional daily in the state, and Kanak News, its Group-owned TV channel, gives the BJD a massive lead over its closest rival BJP. Sampling a survey of over 100,000 respondents, the exit poll forecasts BJD winning 85-95 of the 147 Assembly seats, where outcomes were polled till this report was filed.

The BJP is seen contending with a distant second spot with 25-34 seats, while for the Congress, the poll trend is a reprisal of its mortifying electoral performance in 2014. Congress party’s presence is seen diminishing to 12-15 seats.

With the release of exit polls, political reactions started to pour in.

BJP national Vice president Baijayant Jay Panda said the exit polls survey clearly indicates that Narendra Modi will once again become the prime minister of the country and the BJP-led NDA will form the government at the Centre.

“The trend was clearly visible right from the very beginning when we kicked off the campaign trail in Odisha and even outside Odisha too. Sometimes exit polls tend to be wrong and the results point towards a different trend but when all the exit polls indicate same thing, it will be a shocker if the real results will be different,” said Panda.

Exuding confidence on his win in Kendrapara LS constituency, the former parliamentarian further added, “Last time in 2014, people of Odisha missed the chance to support Modiji, but after witnessing strong reformative measures especially in terms of security and finance, I think people of Odisha had made up their minds to vote for Modi.”

However, the BJD refused to acknowledge the exit poll projections.

“During past exit polls, forecast regarding the BJD had proved to be wrong. In 2009, when exit polls pointed that we would win 6 seats, we got 14. Similarly in 2014, the surveys projected 14 seats for us but we won 20. Exit poll results will be proved wrong and Naveen Patnaik-led BJD will form government in Odisha once again,” said BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra.

Congress Kalahandi LS candidate Bhakta Das said it is unnecessary to argue on validity of exit polls. “Congress will definitely register victory in all the Assembly seats and Lok Sabha seat in Kalahandi,” said Das.

Odisha’s unicameral legislature has a strength of 147 and a party needs to cobble up the magic figure of 74 to form the government. The incumbent BJD had won 117 assembly seats in 2014. The BJD is riding on its organisational strength, Chief Minister Patnaik’s unblemished image and the government’s pro-people and development oriented agenda over 19 years in power.
