Odisha Offers Help to Gujarat to Fight Cyclone ‘Vayu’

As cyclone ‘Vayu’ advances towards the Gujarat coast, Odisha government today offered all help to the western state, which has launched a massive evacuation exercise to shift people from low-lying areas of Saurashtra and Kutch regions.

A deep depression over the Arabian Sea intensified into a “very severe cyclonic storm” today morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. As the cyclone continued to progress towards Saurashtra and Kutch regions of neighbouring Gujarat, the weather department upgraded its severity condition.

Cyclonic storm ‘Vayu’ has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, forcing authorities to put Gujarat on high alert.

The State authorities have swung into action, ordering closure of schools for three days in coastal districts and deploying teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and asking fishermen to return to the coast from high seas.  Authorities have also begun evacuation of people from low lying or vulnerable areas in the coastal districts.

Gujarat Chief Secretary J N Singh called up his Odisha counterpart A P Padhi and sought Odisha's advice on how to tackle the cyclonic storm on war-footing, officials said today.

"Gujarat chief secretary had called me up and discussed the measures to be taken ahead of the landfall. We have offered all kind of help to Gujarat. However, the Gujarat chief secretary has said that they will seek further help if required keeping in view the situation," Padhi told reporters.

The cyclone is set to make a landfall near Veraval in Gir Somnath district on June 13 but it will be preceded by heavy rainfall in isolated places, according to the IMD.

The Gujarat government is in constant touch with Odisha in view of the eastern state's successful handing of similar calamities like cyclone 'Fani' in May this year and cyclone 'Titli' last year, officials said.

Cyclone ‘Vayu’ is moving northerly and is likely to make landfall between Veraval and Porbandar at midnight. It is likely to cause gusty winds to blow at a speed of 145 kmph to 170 kmph by Thursday morning the Coast Guard has said, citing the IMD and ISRO model of tracking.

With Cyclone ‘Vayu’ likely to hit the Gujarat coast on Thursday, the Navy has kept itself ready to respond to any developing situation expeditiously.
