Vienna Is The World’s Most Livable City

Author : Odisha Today Bureau | Posted on: 2019-01-20

Austria’s capital Vienna beat Melbourne, Australia, which held the title for seven years in a row. Vienna has a very low crime rate. Public transport is cheap and efficient. There are plenty of green spaces and lakes. Its healthcare and education achieved a near perfect score. And the threat of terrorist attacks in Western Europe has been downgraded. Vienna is the first European City to top the global livability index. The ranking favours mid-sized cities in wealthy countries with low population densities. Following Vienna and Melbourne the other cities are—Osaka (Japan), Calgary (Canada) and Sydney (Australia). Cities in Australia and Canada took six of the top ten spots. While financial centres such as London and New York ranked positions such as 48th and 57th respectively due to the reasons of crowded public transport and higher crime levels.

The two metropolises Vienna and Melbourne have been neck and neck in the annual survey of 140 urban centres for years, with Melbourne clinching the title for the past seven editions. This year, a downgraded threat of militant attacks in Western Europe as well as the City’s low crime rate helped nudge Vienna into first place. Vienna regularly tops a larger ranking of cities by quality of life compiled by consulting firm Mercer.

Vienna and Melbourne scored maximum points in the healthcare, education and infrastructure categories. But while Melbourne extended its lead in the culture and environment component, that was outweighed by Vienna’s improved stability ranking. Vienna has dislodged Melbourne for the first time at the top of the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Livability Index, strengthening the Austrian capital’s claim to being the World’s most pleasant city to live in.
