United States President Donald Trump on Monday said that India's rise as a prosperous and independent nation was an example for every nation across the world, for it had achieved it all as a peaceful, democratic, tolerant country.

"America loves India. America respects India and America will always be loyal friend of India," Trump said in his opening remarks.

"We will always remember this remarkable hospitality. India will hold a special place in our hearts. PM Modi started out as 'tea wallah', he worked as a tea seller. Everybody loves him but I will tell you this, he is very tough," Trump said.

"All over the planet people take great joy in watching Bollywood films, bhangra, and classic films like DDLJ and Sholay. You cheer on great cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli," the US President said.

Earlier, PM Narendra Modi welcomed US President Donald Trump on a mega stage at Ahmedabad's Motera Stadium to resounding applause from a 100,000-strong crowd.

The two leaders hugged each other twice before the PM took to the dais. "I think today we can see history being repeated. Five months ago, I started my US trip with 'Howdy Modi' and today my friend President Donald Trump is starting his Indian trip with 'Namaste Trump' in Ahmedabad," he said.

"This is Gujarat but the entire country is enthusiastic in welcoming you," Modi said addressing Trump.

The prime minister said India-US relations are no longer just another partnership. "It is a far greater and closer relationship now. One is the 'land of the free' the other believes the world is one family. One feels proud of 'statue of liberty' the other feels proud of the 'statue of unity'."

Modi also welcomed First Lady Melania and said, your presence here is an honour for us. The work you did for healthy and happy America is yielding its result. The work you did for children and the society is commendable.

Appreciating Modi, Trump said, “PM Modi you are not just the pride of Gujarat, you are living proof that with hard work and devotion, Indians can accomplish anything at all, anything they want. The Prime Minister is a moving story of an incredible rise.

Trump said, “125 crore of Indian people gave him a landslide win as no other on the face of the earth. Everybody loves him, but I tell you he is really tough. The life of PM Modi underlines the immense promise and opportunity of India.”

India is now an economic giant. Under PM Modi every village in India has now access to electricity. India will soon be the home of the biggest middle class in the world. You have done it as a peaceful country. Let our two nations stand together as powerful defenders of peace and hope.

Trump said, "Both countries have suffered from radical Islamic terror. Both countries are united in defending citizens from threat of radical Islamic terrorism. Under my administration we unleashed full power of American military on bloodthirsty killers of ISIS. Today ISIS territorial caliphate is 100% destroyed. The monster Al Baghdadi is dead.

"Our relationship with Pakistan is a very good one. My government is working with Pakistan to crack down on terror groups. The US is working towards reducing tensions for all nations of South Asia," Trump said.

Trump confirmed the deal and said I'm pleased to announce that tomorrow our representatives will sign deals to sell over US$ 3 Billion, in the absolute finest state of the art military helicopters and other equipment to the Indian armed forces.

After Trump finishes his address, PM Modi gives his speech.

Modi outlines India-US collaboration in the fields of trade, strategic partnership and scientific research.

Modi said, “India and US are natural partners. Not just in Indo-Pacific , across the world we can bring peace and progress. We are inspired by long-term vision, not short-term gains.”
