Facebook arguably the most popular app in a lot of major markets across the globe has been beaten by WhatsApp in terms of popularity which has surpassed it in terms of monthly active users. According to a report released by analytics firm App Annie, the chat app overtook Facebook last September.  While the report doesn’t provide specific numbers, both the apps have nearly 200 million monthly active users in January 2018, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “WhatsApp had nearly 1.5 billion monthly users at that time.”

In an email, App Annie conveyed to TNW, that India was the top market in terms of active users for WhatsApp followed by Brazil, Mexico, Turkey and Russia.

However, WhatsApp’s growth is not just due to developing markets, its simplicity and end to end encryption made it to the top app in terms of engagement in UK and Canada also.
